DOE Pint Ratings Explained: How to Read Capacity and Efficiency Numbers
A DOE pint rating is moisture removed in 24 hours under specified test conditions. Use it to compare like with like, not as a daily guarantee.

What a pint rating is for
A Department of Energy capacity rating reports how much water a dehumidifier can remove in 24 hours under specified ambient conditions. It is a comparison point, not a guarantee that the unit will collect that amount in every room.
Temperature, humidity, airflow, and how often the unit runs all change actual collection. Use the pint figure to compare products measured the same way, then size against the room’s moisture load rather than treating the label as a daily bucket target.

What changed in the test
Portable dehumidifiers are now tested at 65°F rather than the former 80°F condition. The cooler procedure generally produces a smaller reported capacity. A newer unit can therefore look weaker than an older, otherwise similar unit even when part of the change is the rating method.
DOE publishes only approximate old-to-new correlations, and the change varies by model. The label-to-label translation, including why an old 70-pint figure is not 20 pints stronger than a new 50-pint figure, belongs in old 70-pint versus new 50-pint labels. Class-level 35-pint and 50-pint choices are a separate decision in 35-pint versus 50-pint.
Capacity is not efficiency
Integrated Energy Factor, or IEF, measures liters of moisture removed per kilowatt-hour, including energy used while dehumidifying and, where applicable, in standby or off modes. DOE began using IEF for new dehumidifier ratings in June 2019, replacing EF. An older EF value and a newer IEF value are not interchangeable.

How to use the number
Confirm the test method and product category before comparing two pint figures. If the listing does not identify the conditions, treat the number as a label to verify rather than a precise score.
Then match the current documented capacity to the space and moisture load. Whole-home units have a separate rating framework, including case-volume bands used for efficiency requirements.
