How to Clean a Dehumidifier Filter Correctly

Instructions vary by model. Some washable filters, including the GE AWHL50LD as documented in that model’s owner’s manual, are cleaned on a stated interval with the method the manual allows. Other filters are dry-clean only or are treated as replaceable parts. Do not assume a washable filter because a related model in the same family has one.

The working sequence

Switch the unit off, unplug it, and work where spills can be contained. Open the filter cover or grille as directed. Slide the filter out without bending the frame.

Remove loose dust with the dry method the manual allows. If washing is permitted, use clean water and only the cleaner the instructions name. Do not soak a filter that is specified as dry-clean only, and do not force water into the cabinet.

Dry the filter completely in a clean, ventilated place. Reinstall it in the original orientation, seated in the guides, and close the cover. If the filter is torn, misshapen, or still blocked after cleaning, replace it with the model-approved part.

If performance is still poor

A clean, dry, seated filter should restore intake. If airflow or collection is still weak, the cause may be the drain path, room conditions, or icing—not another round of washing. Frost after a clean filter is covered in why a dehumidifier ices up.

Keep the unit disconnected while the filter is out. Do not operate it with a missing, wet, or damaged filter.
